Hart deposit (Abitibi)

Ontario (Late Archaean Abitibi greenstone belt), Canada

Magmatic (Ni-Cu-PGE, carbonatites)Ni-Cu

Type
Komatiite-associated magmatic Ni-Cu sulfide

A magmatic Ni-Cu sulfide deposit associated with komatiitic lavas of the Archaean Abitibi belt (2.7 Ga). This komatiite-hosted type differs from intrusion-hosted deposits (Norilsk, Jinchuan, Voisey's Bay). It is modest in size but has a remarkable isotopic signature.

ValueRangenMineral or matrixSource
−0.49 / 0.14 ‰barren komatiite (no sulfides)
Barren komatiite, without sulfides, with heavier δ60Ni than the mineralised samples. A reference for the undisturbed silicate host.
Hiebert et al. 2022, Nickel isotope fractionation in komatiites and associated sulfides i…
−1.06 / 0.11 ‰sulfide-bearing rocks (Ni-Cu mineralisation)
Mineralised rocks always have lighter δ60Ni than barren komatiites, in line with the model of fractionation by fractional crystallisation of the sulfide liquid (predicted range +0.17 to -1.02 ‰). Sulfide-rich samples contain 8,380 to 39,300 ppm nickel.
