Magmatic (Ni-Cu-PGE, carbonatites)Ni-Cu (PGE, Co)

Type
Ferropicrite-associated magmatic Ni-Cu sulfide (Palaeoproterozoic)

The second largest nickel-copper deposit in Russia after Norilsk. Mineralisation is associated with ferropicrite flows and intrusions about 2 Ga old, hosted in Proterozoic black shales. Five sulfide types are distinguished: disseminated, massive, breccia-matrix, chalcopyrite veins and sedimentary pyritic layers. The deposit has been mined since the Soviet era (1930s), today by Nornickel through Kola MMC.

−2 / 2 ‰sulfides (West camp, primary Kaul and Kotselvaara ferropicrites)
A symmetrical distribution, with a maximum between 0 and 0.5 ‰ and 97% of samples between -2 and +2 ‰: a pure mantle signature (0 ± 2 ‰, Ripley, 1999). A series of deposits (Kaul, Kotselvaara, Kammikivi, Sputnik-Verkhnee, Yuzhnoe) and the barren intrusions have a uniform δ34S of 1.0 to 2.5 ‰ (a juvenile sulfide source).
Barnes et Melezhik 2001 + Hanski 1992, The composition and mode of formation of the Peche…
1 / 7 ‰sulfides (East camp, large Pilgujärvi and Kierdzhipori intrusions)
The East camp is shifted to higher values, with a maximum between 4.0 and 4.5 ‰: contamination by crustal sulfur from the host black shales, acquired during magma ascent. Sm-Nd and S/Se studies confirm this addition of external sulfur.
