Coal-mine tip, site 2 (confined chalk aquifer)

Nord-Pas-de-Calais coal basin, about 30 km south of Lille, France

Groundwater

Type
Groundwater

Coal-mine tip separated from the chalk by the Louvil clays, in a confined aquifer zone. Carbon released by the waste sustains bacterial sulfate reduction, which makes dissolved sulfate heavier downstream.
