Orogenic goldAu

Type
Birimian orogenic gold, in a jog zone

A recent discovery (2009), part of the Loulo-Gounkoto complex mined by Barrick. Mineralisation lies in a jog zone where metamorphic and magmatic fluids mixed, with albitisation, hydrothermal breccias and carbonate-pyrite cement. Lawrence et al. (2013) studied it for strontium and sulfur isotopes and tourmaline boron isotopes.

8.6 ± 2 ‰5.8 / 12.8 ‰18auriferous pyrite (jog zone)
Auriferous pyrite of the jog zone (18 analyses). The heavy values are attributed to reduction of sulfate held in diagenetic evaporitic sequences. Partial fluid mixing in this zone promotes phase separation and gold deposition.

8.8 ‰auriferous arsenopyrite (one analysis)
A single value on auriferous arsenopyrite, in good agreement with the pyrite mean (8.6 ‰), confirming a single sulfur source for the main ore.
