Boliden

Skellefte district (Västerbotten, north), Sweden

Volcanogenic massive sulfidesAu-Cu-As-Ag

Type
Gold-rich volcanogenic massive sulfide

A Palaeoproterozoic deposit (about 1.89 Ga) of 8.3 Mt of ore at 1.5% Cu, 0.9% Zn, 0.3% Pb and 15.5 g/t Au, hosted in the Skellefte volcanic sequence. It was the richest gold mine in Europe in its time, until it closed in 1967. A magmatic contribution is likely (Au-As-Sb-Ag-Hg, Bi-W-Te-In-Sn).

δ34S in ‰ (per mil) Values of the same system

Standard : V-CDT

ValueRangenMineral or matrixSource
2 / 3 ‰arsenopyrite (massive ore and late veins)
Both ore types have the same sulfur composition (about +2 to +3 ‰), close to most other volcanogenic massive sulfides of the Skellefte district. The sulfur signature survived medium-grade metamorphism.
Wagner et Boyce 2004, Laser microprobe sulphur isotope analysis of arsenopyrite, Boliden …

δ18O in ‰ (per mil) Values of the same system

Standard : V-SMOW

ValueRangenMineral or matrixSource
10.7 / 13.5 ‰peripheral Zn-Pb-Sb-Au mineralisation (sedimentary exhalative)
High δ18O values acquired during diagenesis and preserved through metamorphism. They point to a distal, syn-volcanic exhalative mineralisation that predates metamorphism.
